The original Xbox, released in the UK in 2002, changed console gaming forever. It was released two years after the Sony PlayStation 2; as a result, it was more powerful than its competitor, but more importantly, it had an integrated Xbox Live service that allowed players to game online with or without a broadband connection. This was a completely new concept at the time, at least for console gaming (PC gamers had been doing this for years).

The Original Xbox

Launched in March, 2002 in Europe, the Original Xbox (simply called Xbox), was Microsoft’s first foray into gaming hardware. Competing directly with the Playstation2 and Nintendo Gamecube, the Xbox boasted vastly superior graphical power and a built in hard drive, which made it possible to store music directly to the system. Also introduced was web-based multiplayer and support for LAN multiplayer. It was a groundbreaking achievement in gaming, and bested a great many gaming PCs at the time in regards to power. However, its large size and comparatively small game library meant that it has not been remembered as fondly as the PS2.

Xbox 360

The second-gen Xbox, the Xbox 360 which was launched in the UK in November 2005 and was a competitor to the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Smaller, much more powerful and easier to code for than the PS3, the Xbox 360 was a big hit, with over 78 million units sold worldwide. It also cemented some of the biggest franchises in gaming, like Forza and Gears of War. Multiple versions of the 360 would be released, improving the systems reliability and improving power efficiency.

Xbox One

The current-gen Xbox, the Xbox One, is slightly behind on the hardware front however offers an arguably better user interface than its Japanese competitor, the PlayStation 4. It also arguably boasts a better range of games, which include those from the Halo and Forza franchises. One of key selling points of the Xbox One is the ability to play your Xbox One games on any PC with Windows 10 over Wi-Fi.

The Xbox One was given a new model in 2016 called the Xbox One S, which is 40% smaller, has an integrated power supply, a 4K Blu-Ray player and support for HDR.

Project Scorpio

The secretive mid-generation upgrade to the Xbox One is due to launch around Christmas 2017. No games will be released exclusively for the Scorpio (the code name for the device), but it will be able to play 4K games natively thanks to a 6 teraflop graphics card.

Microsoft’s Xbox customer service team

Microsoft have shipped over 10 million Xbox One’s since launch. As you would expect, with over 10 million users, Microsoft’s Xbox customer service team has grown too. Although there is little to go on in terms of how many people Microsoft employ in the UK to manage their Xbox division, the people employed in a customer service role is thought to be in the thousands. Recently, Microsoft have also started to open up retail stores. Here, it is possible to get customer service directly, however their retail stores are tailored more towards their Surface line of products.

If you have attempted to get support for your Xbox-related enquiry online, you will have noticed that Microsoft have done their very best to bury their Xbox contact us number deep within their website. This is because they do not want you to call them; they want you to search their website for an answer to your question, to reduce the burden on their customer service team. While their website is full of useful information, there are of course certain times when it is necessary to contact Xbox customer services lines because you cannot resolve your problem over the internet.
