Call Ofgem on 020 7901 7295 to make a complaint, for consumer affairs or to find out more about Ofgem’s role.
This phone number is to help you get through to Ofgem’s Customer Service team in the fastest time possible. Ofgem’s call handlers are highly trained to answer your calls about their role as the energy watchdog. Their work is legally complex and many regulations are called into force to sanction energy suppliers who fall short of their responsibilities and promises.
Your query is almost certainly going to have a complex reply, so it is far preferable that you speak to an actual human being, rather than leave a message, or have an ‘online chat’ about your issue. This is where we can help. Dial the Ofgem contact number on this page and you will be put through to the right person in the right department.

Ofgem’s first duty is to protect energy consumers, in particular by promoting competition amongst energy suppliers. They protect consumers by enforcing a system of fines on energy companies who fail to honour the commitments they make to consumers, or breach the law in relation to energy supply.

For example, one energy supplier promised free loft insulation to certain customers, but did not follow through on that pledge. Ofgem fined the company in question. In all, since 2010, Ofgem has levied almost £100 million in fines. The largest fine they have issued was to E.ON, who were forced to pay £12 million pounds. British Gas was fined £1 million in 2014. Almost all energy suppliers fall short on their commitments at some point, and Ofgem makes sure they redress the balance.

Ofgem Frequently Asked Questions
Two of the most commonly asked questions from customers calling Ofgem on 020 7901 7295 are:
I have a complaint about my energy supplier. What should I do?
In the first instance, Ofgem suggest you contact the supplier directly, and make clear the grounds for your grievance. Every energy company has a protocol for dealing with consumer complaints, and they must stick to this. Therefore, you know that your issue will be dealt with within 8 weeks. You can contact the Citizens’ Advice Bureau if you would like some advice. If you and the energy company fail to come to a resolution of your problem, the energy company will declare the matter ‘deadlocked’. You can then contact the ‘Ombudsman Service:Energy’, who will look at the issue again, and help you and the energy company come to an agreement.
I have had a power cut. What do I do?
The first thing you should do is contact your electricity distribution company. This is not the company who sell you electricity (electricity supplier) but by the company who are responsible for maintaining the power lines and cables that transport your electricity. Look on your bill to find out their phone number. Alternatively, look inside your meter cupboard, as there may be a record of it there. It is sensible to make a note of who to call, and leave the information handy. Make sure you turn off all your electrical appliances, except for one light to let you know when power is restored. Keep some candles handy, just in case.
