O2 are one of the UK’s leading mobile network providers, with a history that stretches back to the earliest days of UK mobile telecommunication. The company was formed as something of a side project of John Carrington, the CEO of British Telecom’s emerging Mobile Division, which had recently connected the first cellular service in the UK, joining up London Heathrow Airport to the BT Tower.

The business was sold to Telefonica, a Spanish communications company, for £18 billion in 2005 and in 2015 the company was the subject of a takeover bid from Three owner Hutchison Whampoa for an estimated £10.5 billion, however, this bid failed regulatory approval.
