iPhone 4S Silent Switch Replacement

So recently, the silent/ring switch on your iPhone device’s side started to malfunction. And when you are quite assured that your iPhone silent button is not working at all and it is set to mute mode forever, it suddenly surprises as well as irritates you by ringing at the worst possible moment.

Now most probably your iPhone 4S Silent Switch is defective and it needs an immediate replacement.

The DIY repair for your iPhone 4S Silent Switch is quite possible, provided you have the correct tools, patience and ample time.

Just go through the below mentioned steps for your iPhone 4S Silent Switch replacement:

iPhone-Silence  Tools required:

  • 5-Point Pentalobe Screwdriver
  • Phillips #000 Screwdriver
  • Plastic Razor Tool
  • Flathead Screwdriver
  • SIM Card Extract Tool
  • Tweezers tool

iPhone-SilenceStep 1:

  • Make sure to power off your iPhone 4S device.
  • Use your Pentalobe screwdriver to unscrew both of the 3.6 mm Pentalobe screws located near the dock connector.

iPhone-SilenceStep 2:

  • With both of your thumbs, slide the rear panel towards the iPhone’s top edge for about 2 mm.
  • Then detach the rear panel away from the device and make sure not to damage the plastic clips attached with the rear panel.

iPhone-SilenceStep 3:

  • Unscrew and remove both of the Phillips screws (single 1.7 mm and a single 1.5 mm screw) which attaches the battery connector with the logic board.
  • With your plastic razor tool, carefully disconnect the battery connector from your device.

iPhone-SilenceStep 4:

iPhone 4S battery removal:

  • With your plastic razor tool, just lift the pressure contact from beneath the battery connector.

Reminder: Just ensure not to remove the other four pressure contact point located on the logic board.

  • Wedge your plastic razor tool’s edge just in-between the battery and the outer case near the device’s bottom left corner.
  • Slide your plastic razor tool along the battery’s right edge and twist the razor tool at several points to detach the battery away from the adhesive sticking it with the outer case.
  • Grab and gently pull the exposed clear plastic pull tab to peel off the battery from the adhesive sticking it with the device.
  • Just detach the battery.

iPhone-SilenceStep 5:

Dock connector cable:

  • Unscrew both of the Phillips screws (a single 1.5 mm screw and a single 1.2 mm screw) which attaches the dock connector cable cover with the logic board.
  • Detach the metal dock connector cable cover.
  • With the plastic razor tool’s edge, disconnect the dock cable from its socket on the logic board.
  • Then peel off the dock connector cable from the adhesive sticking it with the logic board as well as the speaker enclosure side.
  • With your plastic razor tool edge, detach the cellular antenna cable away from its socket on the logic board.
  • Remove the cellular antenna cable from beneath the metal fingers secured to the logic board.

iPhone-SilenceStep 6:

  • Now either use spudger tool or plastic razor tool or tweezers tool to remove the plastic outer ring.
  • Then unscrew all the four Phillips screws (a single 2.7 mm, single 2.6 mm, single 1.3 mm and a single 1.2 mm screw) which attaches the cable cover with the logic board.
  • With the plastic razor tool’s edge, try to open up the cable cover tabs from their slots attached with the logic board’s EMI shield.
  • Pick the cable cover with its nearest top edge and pull it out of the device.
  • With the plastic razor tool’s edge, just detach the rear camera connector from its socket on the logic board.
  • Disconnect the rear camera from your device.

iPhone-SilenceStep 7: SIM Card removal:

  • With your SIM card extract tool or any paperclip, try to extract the SIM card holder as well as the SIM card.
  • Take out both the SIM card as well as its holder.

iPhone-SilenceStep 8: Logic Board:

  • Detach all the five cables (front facing camera cable, headphone jack/volume button cable, display data cable, digitizer cable and the Power button cable) located near the logic board’s top.
  • With the Phillips screwdriver, unscrew and remove the single 1.5 mm Phillips screw which attaches the grounding clip with the logic board.
  • With your spudger tool tip, disconnect the small grounding clip from the logic board.
  • Cautiously grab the grounding clip and pull it out of the device.
  • With your flathead screwdriver, unscrew the 4.8 mm standoff screw located near the headphone jack.
  • Then with the plastic razor tool, detach the Wi-Fi antenna cable from the logic board.
  • In case if a black tape piece is visible wrapping the hidden Phillips screw near the power button, just peel it off.
  • Unscrew the hidden 2.6 mm Phillips screw with your Phillips screwdriver which attaches the logic board near the power button.
  • Unscrew all the screws (a single 2.5 mm screw located next to the vibrator motor, a single 2.4 mm screw and a single 3.6 mm standoff  screw) attaches the logic board with the case near the battery opening on the logic board’s side.
  • Cautiously pick the logic board with the end near the speaker enclosure assembly and drag it away from your iPhone’s top edge.
  • Now detach the logic board assembly.

iPhone-SilenceStep 9: Front facing camera retainer:

  • With the plastic razor tool’s edge, gently open up the metal retainer of the front facing camera away from your device’s case.
  • Then remove the metal retainer.

iPhone-SilenceStep 10: Upper Antenna removal:

  • Unscrew the 2.4 mm Phillips screw located near the headphone jack assembly, with your Phillips screwdriver.
  • With your plastic razor tool’s edge, try to peel off the upper antenna from the headphone jack assembly.
  • With the tweezers tool, just detach the upper antenna from your device.

Step 11: Headphone Jack cable assembly:

  • With the plastic razor tool, detach the headphone jack from its very recess.
  • Again with your plastic razor tool, peel off the top microphone out of the outer case.
  • Then just take the headphone jack body out of your iPhone’s top edge.
  • Unscrew the 1.6 mm Phillips screw which attaches the upper antenna with the outer case.
  • Unscrew all the four 1.5 mm Phillips screws which attaches the volume button and silent switch brackets with the outer case.
  • Use the tweezers tool to carefully pick the silent switch bracket out of the outer case.
  • Gently peel off the headphone jack/volume button cables from the adhesive sticking them with the rear case.
  • Detach the headphone jack cable assembly away from your device.
  • Now use your tweezers tool to detach the silent switch away from the iPhone case.

iPhone-SilenceStep 12:

  • Replace the old silent switch with the new one.
  • Now to reassemble your iPhone 4S device, follow all the above steps in reverse order.
