iPhone 4 Front Facing Camera Replacement: How-to Guide

No doubt! Your front facing camera is so important to you specifically if you are an ardent follower of Skype or FaceTime on your iPhone 4. And when you find out that your iPhone 4’s front facing camera is either malfunctioning or not working, the first thing to check out is the existing warranty period of your device.

If it’s under warranty then you’re safe and if it’s out of warranty, then don’t panic as iPhone 4 Front Facing Camera repair is quite possible. Only things you got to have are patience, ample spare time and of course correct tools.

AppleHow to repair/replace your iPhone 4’s front facing camera:

Tools required:

  • Phillips #000 Screwdriver.
  • iPhone 4 Pentalobe Screwdriver (5-Point).
  • 2.5 mm Flathead Screwdriver.
  • Plastic razor tools.
  • Spudger tool.
  • SIM Card Eject tool.
  • Tweezers.

AppleStep 1:

  • First of all make sure to switch off your iPhone 4 device.
  • Now unscrew and remove either the two 3.6 mm Pentalobe screws or two Phillips #000 screws located next to the dock connector, with the Pentalobe Screwdriver or the Phillips Screwdriver.

AppleStep 2:

  • Now push to slide the rear panel towards the device’s top edge.
  • Just hold the rear panel firmly with your fingers and gently pull it away from your iPhone.

AppleStep 3:

Steps to remove iPhone 4 battery:

  • Use the Phillips screwdriver to unscrew and remove the single 2.5 mm Phillips screw, which attaches the battery connector with the logic board.
  • Now use the plastic razor tool to carefully disconnect the battery connector from its socket on the logic board.
  • Also take out the metal clip wrapping the antenna connector.
  • Just grab and gently pull the clear plastic pull tab to remove the powerful iPhone 4 battery out of your device.
  • Also gently pull out the contact clip from your device.

AppleStep 4:

  • Now with the SIM card eject tool or any paperclip, try to remove the SIM card as well as its holder.

AppleStep 5:

  • Unscrew and remove both of the 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm Phillips screw with the Phillips screwdriver.
  • Now pop off the thin steel dock connector cable cover away from your device.

AppleStep 6:

  • With the help of plastic razor tool carefully pop off the dock cable connector from the logic board, at the both short ends of the connector.
  • Now cautiously peel off the dock ribbon cable from both the lower speaker enclosure as well as the logic board.

AppleStep 7:

  • With the plastic razor tool, just disconnect the lower antenna connector from its socket on the logic board.

AppleStep 8:

  • Unscrew and remove the single 1.9 mm Phillips screw, with the Phillips screwdriver, attaching the logic board’s bottom with its inner case.

AppleStep 9:

  • Unscrew and remove each of the single screws including 2.3 mm Phillips, 1.4 mm Phillips, 4.8 mm Phillips screws and two 1.6 mm Phillips screws, attaching the Wi-Fi antenna with the logic board.

AppleStep 10:

  • Now with the plastic razor tool gently lift the Wi-Fi antenna’s top edge away from the logic board.
  • And with the spudger tool’s tip, just pull up the Wi-Fi retaining clips, away from the inner frame.
  • Now just pull out the Wi-Fi antenna away from your device. And do ensure that the metal clips on the top of the cover, is not lost where the 4.8mm screw attaches.

Reminder: Losing the metal clips is the primary reason why your Wi-Fi performs abnormally after the reassembly.

AppleStep 11:

  • With the plastic razor tool, cautiously pull the rear camera connector off from its socket on the logic board.
  • Gently remove the rear camera assembly.

AppleStep 12:

  • Just remove the visible warranty sticker as well as the water indicator wrapping the screw near the battery pull tab.
  • Then unscrew and remove the single 2.4 mm Phillips screw which is hidden beneath the sticker.

AppleStep 13:

  • With the plastic razor tool’s flat end, carefully pop off all the connectors from their respective sockets on the logic board. These connectors include the digitizer cable, LCD cable, headphone jack/volume button cable, top microphone/sleep button cable and the front camera cable.
  • And with the flathead screwdriver, just unscrew and remove the 4.8 mm screw located near the headphone jack.

AppleStep 14:

  • Now cautiously pull out the logic board from the device, without damaging any cables coming in between.

AppleStep 15:

Disassembling front camera assembly:

  • Again with the plastic razor tool’s flat edge, just pull the thin steel front camera retainer away from the front camera.
  • Then take out the front camera retainer.

AppleStep 16:

  • Now cautiously pull out the front facing camera from the iPhone device.
  • Replace it with the new camera assembly.
  • To reassemble your iPhone 4 device, just follow the above mentioned steps in reverse order (i.e. back from Step 15 to Step 1).
