DVLA Frequently Asked Questions
Two of the most commonly asked questions from customers calling DVLA on 0300 790 6801 are:
I want to buy a personalised number plate. Can you tell me about the service you offer?
The DVLA has held back some combinations of registration numbers, because people expressed a desire to have personalised number plates. The DVLA started to sell these from 1989, and there are millions of personalised registration numbers still available. Some personalised plates are highly sought after, and fetch large sale prices.
Others are less popular, and it is possible to pick them up for a relatively low cost. None of the personalised number plates the DVLA sell have been previously issued. If there is a rare number plate you want to purchase you may be able to do so at a DVLA Auction, which are held nationwide throughout the year.
How do I change the name on my driver’s license?
You can apply to do this online, by filling in a form. You must send your current driving license to the address given, with any supporting documents. You can change your title or surname in this way. You may drive whilst waiting for the new license to arrive. For the photocard driving licence you will have to fill in D1 form (D1 Application for a driving license), available at the Post Office or from the DVLA form ordering service, and include the documents listed, such as proof of your name change and the original card. Paper driving licenses require you to fill in the same form, and provide documentation. If you cannot send your current license in, you must say so on the form. You must also update your V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book).
