All About Virgin Media
Virgin Media are probably best known as the brand which placed Richard Branson front and centre for their advertising campaigns. They’re also well known for introducing the concept of so-called ‘quad play’ deals to the United Kingdom, but what do you really know about one of the UK’s largest telecommunications companies? In this short guide, we’ll run you through the history, services and contact details for Virgin Media, so join us as we do just that.
The company can actually trace its origins back to two giants of an Internet era now gone by – NTL and Telewest. These two companies, which can trace their histories to 1984 and 1993 respectively, grew to be synonymous with the burgeoning popularity of the Internet, and were competing directly with the likes of BT for customer growth. Indeed, Telewest once formed part of the FTSE 100, the 100 businesses with the highest market cap in the UK. NTL, meanwhile, had its focus on cable technology, and dominated the UK cable market, with 90% of all cable services belonging to NTL, powering pay-TV and home Internet.
These two companies merged in March 2006 when NTL purchased Telewest for US$16 billion to form one of the largest media companies in the UK. With a national scope. The company quickly announced it was in touch with the mobile virtual network operator Virgin Mobile UK about the possibility of a merger. Following a number of failed talks, NTL purchased Virgin Mobile for £962.4 million, with Richard Branson accepting a mixture of cash and shares which made him a 10.7% shareholder of the newly combined company. The deal included a 30 year exclusivity agreement for the Virgin name and branding, and on the 8th of November, NTL:Telewest became Virgin Media Inc.
Since then, Virgin Media has grown at an exceptional speed, partly thanks to its quad play offering, which means that customers can sign on for their fantastic TV packages, home phone, mobile telephone and broadband, therefore lowering the overall cost. Or, perhaps it’s because they regularly offer the fasted broadband in the country, thanks to their DOCSIS 3.0 fibre optic cables, which are capable of delivering up to 200Mbps. Either way, Virgin Media remain an incredibly big deal in the UK telecommunications scene, and we’d expect them to stay that way for a very long time.
