Update: Since late 2016, Sky have moved to make Sky Q the standard system for all new and upgrading Sky customers, completely replacing the Sky+ HD box. They’ve also moved to simplify their pricing structures for those who call Sky, thanks to a great deal of public feedback.
Update: The Now TV Smart Box is now available to all new and existing Now TV customers at a cost of £30. However, if you choose to take an internet and TV bundle from Now TV, you receive the Smart Box at no extra charge. To upgrade, simply call the Sky customer service number and ask them about the Now TV Smart Box.
Update: Since the announcement of Sky Q, Sky have made a number of important tweaks to the pricing structure of Sky Q. Most notably, Sky have made Sky Q their standard option for all new and upgrading customers. Today, you can land a Sky Q box with the Original bundle for just £22 a month, the Variety bundle & Sky Q costs £32 a month and the Box Sets bundle costs just &38 a month. With each of these bundles, the cost of the box is included, and you can add Sky Fibre broadband for another £20 a month. To upgrade or sign up, call the Sky helpline.
Update: Since the original publication of this article, Sky have released a series of incredible new programmes on to their Box Sets, including huge hits like Fortitude, Girls, Wayward Pines, Victoria, Billions, The Last Panthers, The Affair and much, much more. To upgrade, simple call the Sky Number and they’ll help you activate box sets.
Update: Since the original publication of this article, Sky have launched their Sky Q platform. Sky Q can be specced up to 2TB worth of storage, but also has 4 more tuners for recording more programming at once. Additionally, Sky Q features streaming to tablets and smartphones, as well as improved whole home broadband solutions and support for 4K TVs. In short, Sky Q is the leading option if you’re serious about your TV. To upgrade, simply call Sky contact and tell them your intention to upgrade.
Update: Since this post was originally published, Sky have made Sky Q the default box powering their TV service for all new customers, or customers upgrading. That’s fantastic news for new customers on Sky contact, who no longer have to pay extra for Sky Q. Sky have also flipped the switch on 4K broadcasts since this review roundup was first published, so customers with 4K TVs can watch live sport and drama in Ultra-HD at no extra charge, if they’ve already got a HD subscription.
Update: Since the launch of Sky VR, Sky have been regularly updating the app with VR content, but there’s one aspect which remains disappointing – No Google Daydream support. That’s been an annoyance for some customers in the reviews and on the Sky tel number, but if you’ve got a Google Cardboard device, it still represents a top VR option on smartphones.
Update: Since the launch of Sky Q, the company have been inundated with calls to the Sky customer service number from existing customers looking to upgrade to Sky Q. As a result, Sky have moved to make Sky Q standard for all new customers, as well as slashing the cost of upgrading for customers on Sky+. They’ve also launched their 4K service with lots of on-demand content and hundreds of Sky Sports Premier League matches broadcast in the high resolution format. Update: Sky Q has proven to be a huge hit since Sky made the transition towards the boxes as standard, but they have once again reiterated that customers who remain on Sky+ won’t be left out when it comes to new features. Though the legacy box is unlikely to see any major revision, Sky have committed to bringing nice new features to the box. So, even though Sky customer services will no longer offer your a Sky+ box as standard, you’ll see a steady trickle of new features come to the service.
UPDATE – Sky Mobile has today launched in the UK, after a prolonged period of pre-registration for Sky customers interested in signing up for the mobile network. From today, however, anyone who wants to join Sky Mobile can do just that.
